Nourishment is
part of the experience.

Chef duo Lena & Leo Ropp thoughtfully create vibrant garden-to-table, 100% whole-food plant-based cuisine using ingredients harvested from Wilder’s gardens and sourced from local organic farmers.

Inspired by the traditional foodways of Costa Rica’s Blue Zones, their cooking celebrates the abundance of simple foods from the land: tropical fruits, hearty beans and lentils, rice, garden vegetables, fragrant herbs, homegrown sprouts, house-made fermented foods and naturally rich spices. Dishes are crafted without added oils or heavily processed ingredients, allowing fresh flavors to shine.

Meals are shared overlooking the gardens and Pacific Ocean, inviting conversation, laughter and meaningful connection. It’s colorful, joyful food made to nourish the body.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions.

Travel, life at Wilder, cuisine, accommodation and hosting arrangements—all in one place.

Travel & transportation

Where do I fly into in Costa Rica?

Fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José (SJO). From there, you can continue by domestic flight to Quepos and then travel by road to Wilder. The flight is approximately 20 minutes and the drive from Quepos Airport is around 20 minutes. We will help coordinate the route with your retreat dates.

When should I arrive in San José?

If you plan to arrive on the day your retreat begins, aim to land at SJO before 1 pm to allow time for your onward journey. If this is not possible, arrive the day before and stay overnight near the airport. Domestic flight times vary; confirm your connection and check-in time with us before booking international flights. The domestic terminal is a short walk from the international terminal.

Do I have to take a small airplane to Quepos?

A domestic flight is the quickest onward journey from San José. For hosted groups, a private charter can be arranged as part of the retreat plan. Your proposal will specify whether flights are included. Ground transportation can be arranged as an alternative, with any additional cost confirmed in advance.

Where can I stay if I arrive a day early?

Options near San José Airport include Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belén, Holiday Inn Express San José Costa Rica Airport and Hampton by Hilton San José Airport. Choose an overnight stay that works with your onward travel and confirm current availability directly with the hotel.

Do I need a 4×4 to reach Wilder?

Yes. Wilder is about 2 km up a gravel mountain road within a gated community. A 4×4 vehicle is required. If you prefer not to drive, please arrange your transfer with us in advance.

Life at Wilder

Where is Wilder Sanctuary located?

Wilder is on Costa Rica’s South Pacific coast, approximately 10 minutes north of Dominical and 30 minutes south of Manuel Antonio. We are around 500 metres above sea level, with sweeping Pacific Ocean views. The drive from Quepos Airport takes approximately 20 minutes.

What should I expect when staying at Wilder?

Wilder is a family-owned, fully off-grid sanctuary on 30 acres of rainforest. Staying here feels personal, like being welcomed into a family home. We ask guests to care for our shared spaces and the land as they would their own home. Solar power, refillable bathroom amenities and reusable water bottles are part of everyday life here.

What should I bring for my retreat?

Bring a wide-brimmed hat, reusable water bottle, sandals, comfortable closed-toe walking shoes with good grip, swimwear, yoga clothes and a rain jacket. Jungle paths can be muddy and slippery. A small flashlight or headlamp is helpful on our softly lit paths. Please choose natural, biodegradable toiletries, sunscreen and insect repellent, and bring any personal essentials you need.

What does Wilder provide?

We provide shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, a hairdryer, beach and pool towels, umbrellas and headlamps. If you prefer a personal quick-dry towel or your own headlamp, you are welcome to bring them. Guests with appliances from outside North America may need a plug adapter.

Is there much walking? Are the pathways steep?

Wilder is a hillside sanctuary with steep garden paths and steps. Tropical Casita is about a three-minute garden walk from Bamboo Villa and the Yoga Shala, where meals and activities take place. Bamboo Villa bedrooms are within the main villa. Please discuss mobility needs with us before booking so we can explain the paths and available arrangements.

How often does it rain?

During the green season, generally May to November, afternoon showers are common and nourish the rainforest. Mornings are often clearer, though weather varies. Bring a rain jacket; umbrellas are provided at Wilder.

What is your smoking and alcohol policy?

Wilder is an alcohol-free and smoke-free sanctuary. Guests agree to these policies before arrival. Bringing alcohol or smoking in the rooms may result in being asked to leave the retreat and property, with alternative accommodation and onward travel at the guest’s own expense.

Amenities & experiences

Do you have a gym?

We do not have a gym. Our Yoga Shala is available for personal practice outside scheduled sessions, and our rainforest trails offer opportunities to walk and hike.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Yes, high-speed Wi-Fi is available. Areas such as the waterfalls and natural pools are intentionally without Wi-Fi, offering space to disconnect and be present in nature.

How far is the beach?

Matapalo Beach is approximately a seven-minute drive away. Dominical is around 15 minutes away, and Manuel Antonio beaches are approximately 40 minutes away. Travel times depend on road and weather conditions.

Can I visit the beach during my retreat?

Beach visits are not included in our standard retreat packages, but can be arranged as an additional experience. Transportation, timing and any activity fees are quoted separately based on your group’s preferences and retreat schedule.

Are there walks and hikes at Wilder?

Our private 30-acre sanctuary includes rainforest trails, garden paths, creeks and waterfalls. Ask us which routes are suitable for the conditions that day before heading out.

Are there mosquitoes? Do the rooms have air conditioning?

Mosquito activity varies, so we recommend bringing insect repellent, especially for beach days and rainforest walks. All beds have mosquito nets.

Sea breezes by day and cool mountain breezes at night help keep air moving through the house, which was intentionally designed to minimize radiant heat and maximize natural airflow. Rooms have fans, without air conditioning.

It’s an opportunity to take a break from enclosed, air-conditioned spaces and enjoy fresh rainforest air—to fall asleep to the sounds of the forest, wake to birdsong, and reconnect with nature throughout your stay.

How do I arrange a massage or spa ritual?

Discuss your preferred treatments with Lena while planning your retreat or before arrival. Green Door Rainforest Spa offers massages, botanical bathing and body care rituals. Treatments may take place in the Yoga Shala, garden terrace or poolside, depending on the treatment, weather and available space. Confirm the current menu, prices and any included treatments when booking.

Do you offer laundry services?

Yes. Laundry service is available for $25 USD per load, including pickup, washing, drying, folding and delivery back to you. Please allow approximately 24 hours.

How should I look after valuables?

Safety boxes are available in all accommodations. We recommend keeping important belongings secured whenever you are away from your room.

What electrical outlets are used?

Costa Rica uses North American-style outlets. Bring a suitable adapter if your plugs use a different system and check your appliance’s voltage requirements before travel.

What kind of staff do you have?

Our onsite team includes more than 10 local Costa Ricans who support Wilder across facilities, hosting, maintenance, kitchen, housekeeping, gardens, security, driving and guest care.

Living cuisine & nourishment

What is the food like at Wilder?

Wilder’s cuisine is entirely whole-food plant-based, inspired by the traditional, longevity-supporting foods of Costa Rica’s Blue Zones. Expect vibrant tropical fruits, garden vegetables, fresh herbs, sprouts, beans, lentils, rice and house-made ferments, thoughtfully prepared without relying on added oils or heavily processed ingredients. Much comes from our gardens, complemented by produce from local farmers. Every meal celebrates the abundance, flavor and joy of food from the land.

Can I help design the menu?

Yes. During your retreat planning call with Lena, you can discuss meal preferences, the rhythm of your days and the menu for your group. You can also email reservations@wildersanctuary.com with questions before your call.

How do I share allergies or specific dietary needs?

Please tell us about allergies and dietary requirements during planning and on your pre-arrival form. Discuss specific needs directly with Lena before confirming your stay, so we can agree on what can be accommodated and plan meals appropriately.

Will there be food between meals?

We serve three deeply nourishing meals daily. Herbal infusions and teas are available throughout the day. If you need something additional, please let us know so we can help.

Can I drink the tap water?

Yes. Wilder’s drinking water is supplied from our rainforest spring and is available from all the faucets on the property. Bring a reusable bottle to refill during your stay.

Accommodation

How many guests can stay at Wilder?

We welcome up to 12 guests across Bamboo Villa and Tropical Casita, including retreat hosts and facilitators. Bamboo Villa offers five bedrooms: a king suite and four queen bedrooms, with a choice in the queen rooms between sharing a queen bed and using a comfortable single-guest loft with a twin bed. Each pair of queen rooms shares a bathroom and shower. Tropical Casita has a queen bed for two guests. We will plan room arrangements with your group to make sure everyone is comfortable.

Where do private retreat guests stay?

Private retreat guests currently stay in Tropical Casita, a private rainforest hideaway with a queen bed, peaceful garden terrace and rain shower. Bamboo Villa is featured separately for hosted group retreats. We confirm accommodation as part of your individual retreat plan.

Are the showers outdoors?

Tropical Casita has a private outdoor shower with jungle views. Bamboo Villa bathrooms have open windows looking into the rainforest and surrounding landscape.

What bathroom amenities are included?

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a hairdryer are provided. Our approach favours refillable amenities and natural ingredients.

Are there safety boxes for personal belongings?

Yes. Safety boxes are available in all accommodations.

For retreat hosts

If I want to host a retreat, what does the payment structure look like?

Private Retreat Hosting

Starting at $21,000 for five nights

Each additional night is charged at $350 per person.

Enjoy exclusive use of Wilder Sanctuary for your private retreat, with accommodation for up to 12 people, including the retreat leader or facilitators.

Your package includes thoughtfully prepared whole-food, plant-based meals, nonalcoholic beverages, use of the sanctuary’s shared spaces, and attentive hospitality throughout your stay.

Additional experiences, including spa treatments, wellness sessions, workshops, transportation, and off-site excursions, can be arranged according to your group’s interests and quoted separately.

Each retreat is thoughtfully tailored to your vision, group size, and preferred dates.

A 30% deposit of your agreed contract value holds the dates. The remaining balance is split into two equal payments, with the final payment due one month before your retreat. Your signed agreement confirms the payment dates and all included services.

Am I responsible for a minimum number of participants or a minimum contract amount?

You are responsible for the agreed contract value. Private retreat hosting starts at $21,000 USD for five nights, for up to 12 people including retreat leaders and facilitators. Each additional night is charged at $350 per person. You may bring fewer people—for example, eight or ten—but the minimum contract value still applies.

During your Retreat Creation Call with Lena, we discuss your group size, room arrangements and participant prices so you can plan your retreat with a clear understanding of the costs.

What do hosts usually charge for different accommodations?

As a general guide, hosts often price private rooms at $5,000–$6,500 USD and shared double rooms at $3,500–$5,000 USD for a complete retreat. These are indicative retreat prices, not nightly accommodation rates. Each host ultimately sets their own participant pricing based on retreat length, group size, desired revenue, included experiences and the audience they wish to attract.

Who sets the prices for my participants?

As the retreat host, you set your participant prices according to your program, accommodation choices, audience and costs. During planning with Lena, we can discuss room arrangements and the services included in your retreat so you can price your offering clearly.

What is the cancellation policy?

Retreat payments are non-refundable under our retreat booking terms. We recommend arranging travel insurance that fits your needs and checking its cancellation coverage carefully. Any request to transfer a booking is considered individually and requires agreement from Wilder and the retreat host. Your signed agreement contains the terms that apply to your retreat.
